Standard 1: Content and Foundational Knowledge
Physical education candidates demonstrate an understanding of common and specialized content, and scientific and theoretical foundations for the delivery of an effective preK-12 physical education program.
1a.
Describe and apply common content knowledge for teaching preK- 12 physical education.
***During our Fitnessgram unit, I teach my students how to calculate their heart rates. This is an example of integrating math into physical education. Here is the formula they use. I show them where they place their fingers to find their heart beating and I count the 15 seconds for them. They have to show their work within the formula on the board or on their papers.

Describe and apply specialized content knowledge for teaching preK-12 physical education.
***Here is a website that I use for students to take notes during our basketball unit on how to properly shoot a basketball. I also make sure I have them watch multiple YouTube videos (here is one of my favorites) on properly shooting a basketball to ensure that they have proper form.

1c.
Describe and apply physiological and biomechanical concepts related to skillful movement, physical activity and fitness for preK-12 students.
***I think it's important to have visuals of what you are trying to explain to your students, especially when you are introducing a new sport/activity. Here is a picture that I use as a reference when explaining how to properly throw a backhand throw around or over defense in my Ultimate Frisbee unit. This picture really breaks down the mechanics of the throw.

1d.
Describe and apply motor learning and behavior-change/psychological principles related to skillful movement, physical activity and fitness for preK-12 students.
***When I introduced the Ultimate Frisbee unit, I also introduced Spirit of the Game to my students. A lot of my students don't know how to accept losing, so I thought this was a good way to introduce sportsmanship to a higher degree. At the end of every class, I made the students take a sticky note and rate their SOTG for that day. The challenge was really to self-reflect and be honest with yourself. By them reflecting, it made it easier for them to be aware the next day and to make sure they corrected behaviors, actions, etc.

1e.
Describe and apply motor development theory and principles related to fundamental motor skills, skillful movement, physical activity and fitness for preK-12 students.
***Here is a question/chart I had to fill in to determine kicking tasks that lead up to a mature kick. The chart shows the steps the students would take through each developmental stage. (Makes teachers more aware of where their students are regardless of grade-level/age)

1f.
Describe historical, philosophical, and social perspectives of physical education issues and legislation.
|
***Here is a table I had to create for a class that compares IDEA and Section 504, as it relates to Physical Education.
